About
Sarah Fuhrman is a ballet coach and teacher based in Portland, Oregon, with an extensive career as both a professional dancer and mentor. She began her training at The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre and, at just 17, joined the company as a professional dancer. During her years at OBT, she performed both principal roles and corps de ballet repertoire, gaining early recognition for her artistry and technical strength.
Her career took her abroad to St. Petersburg, Russia, where she danced with the Mussorgsky Ballet and Opera, before returning to the U.S. to join Colorado Ballet, State Street Ballet, and Nevada Ballet Theatre. While at Nevada Ballet, Sarah expanded her artistry into leadership as a rehearsal assistant for the company and the school, helping to shape productions behind the scenes.
A defining influence in Sarah’s career was her mentorship with legendary ballerina Cynthia Gregory, whose guidance instilled in her the importance of nurturing dancers as individuals and celebrating their unique strengths. After retiring from the classical stage, Sarah continued performing with Éowyn Emerald & Dancers, a contemporary company based in Scotland, further expanding her artistic voice.
Sarah is a certified Classical Pilates instructor, she uses these skills to teach with mindfulness and always puts injury prevention first.
In addition to performing, Sarah has developed a reputation as a creative choreographer. She has choreographed original ballets including Clue, The Ballet and 5 Six 7 8, a playful spoof weaving together themes from multiple classics and set to themes from the hit musical Six. She has also choreographed works for competitions and set classical ballets for schools and companies, blending innovation with tradition.
Today, Sarah is dedicated to teaching and coaching the next generation of dancers. Her approach emphasizes not only strong classical technique, but also the development of confidence, accountability, and life skills that extend far beyond the studio. She believes ballet can be both a rigorous discipline and a powerful tool for personal growth, inspiring her students to thrive as artists and as people.
